I had thought that there was something weird about Top Pick Nominations since I used to get quite a few and in the past year or so that number has dropped by a lot. My images had not gotten that much worse nor had other’s images gotten that much better so I decided to do a bit of research to see if this was a trend or just me or my imagination.
Turns out there HAS been a bit of a crash in the number of nominations:
12-31-23 to 12-31-24 - 4781 nominations
12-31-24 to 12-31-25 - 3184 nominations
12-31-26 to 6-30-26 - 958 nominations - extrapolated for the year that would be 1916 nominations
This is an almost 60% decrease in nominations from 2024 to 2026.
One would not expect these numbers to be going down but rather up since one would expect that there are more AB members and therefore more submissions. If that is the case then nominations should (at least theoretically) be going up instead. Are AB members getting discouraged and not submitting or is there something else going on?
So three questions:
1) Why?
2) Does this mean deserving images are being ignored?
3) Have standards changed and (if so) how and why?
It does mean I have pretty much lost confidence in the system and others also seem to feel that way (note recent “View Into Space” video).
Note I am not talking about IOTD here - there are always 365/6 of those so those are likely affected little or none.
At the end of the day it probably does not matter - like most imagers I know when my images are good and when they are not so great - but it does make me wonder what happened.
To be honest, I would rather see no awards than broken ones.
