Choosing SHO filters for an Epsilon under Bortle 7–8

Hello everyone,


I recently bought a set of Baader LRGB + f/3 3.5/4nm SHO filters for my Epsilon 160ED
Unfortunately, some of the filters produce halos, so I will be returning the set.

I would like to buy a different set of filters instead.
I don't want to go with Chroma or Astronomik.
The price is to high at the moment.

At the moment, I am interested in the following filters:
Antlia 3nm highspeed
Antlia 6nm highspeed
Antlia 4.5nm
Antlia 7nm

I have had good experiences with Antlia filters in the past, which is why they are currently at the top of my list.
Ideally, I would like to go with something relatively narrow, such as the 4.5 nm or 3 nm Highspeed filters.

Now to my two main questions:

I image under Bortle 7–8 skies.
Does it make sense to use, for example, the 6nm or 7nm filters under these conditions?

When imaging under very dark skies, many astrophotographers seem to prefer somewhat broader filters rather than extremely narrow ones.
However, I assume that under Bortle 7–8 skies I would benefit more from narrower filters such as the 3nm or 4.5nm SHO filters.

Or how do you see it?

Which filters would you choose for the Epsilon 160? Are there any others I might have overlooked?

Unfortunately, there isn't a lot of information available about the 3nm or 6nm highspeed filters.
The images I have seen look very good so far, assuming they haven't been heavily processed or selectively edited.

The 4.5nm filters also seem to be very popular, and one advantage is that they can also be used with slower telescopes.
However, I have read quite a few times that while they work reasonably well with fast telescopes, the dedicated highspeed filters can still provide noticeably better results.

I would be very interested to hear your opinions and, especially, your personal experiences with these filters.

I use Antilla 3nm and have no halos. In typical Bortle 1 there’s plenty of imaging time but the moon still shines. So I’m not sure where 6nm makes sense.

I assume the 3nm are good a f 3.3

Are you using the normal 3nm or the high speed ones?

I shoot 6.5nm NB filters under B8 and I’m happy with the results.

V series pro, which seem to be rated to f/3. But I’m f/4.9. Takahashi Europe will be pleased to help you out. They take good care of their customers.

Too expensive to guess.

why not Astronomik? They are not even close to Chroma prices and I had thought basically same as Antlia?

I use the 6nm MaxFR’s on my E130 - specifically designed for fast optics. No Halo’s.

When you order Antlia directly in China they are way cheaper then here in Europe.

A set of 36mm Astronomik LRGB + 6nm maxFR would be around 1600€.

A set of 36mm Antlia LRGB + 3nm highspeed would be around 1150€.

At set of 2” Antlia LRGB + 6nm highspeed would be around 1100€.
(2” because you cant get the 6nm highspeed in 36mm)

~500€ difference, that would cover the cost of a filterweehl.
With the Astronomik + a wheel I would end around 2000€.

I had a set of Astronomik LRGB and maxFR a while ago.
They where great, but when I get roughly the same performance with the Antlia 6nm or a narrower bandpass with the 3nm its hard for me to spend 500€ extra.

Well I guess you get what you pay for and you choose where to spend.

You already paid for premium Japanese optics…save up a bit and get the better filters is where i’d advise but up to you…

I have the baader f/2 6nm filters with my f/2.8 newtonian and they are good, ive not seen halos yet…

With an f/3.3, any 6nm filter with a flatish bandpass peak will be suitable enough, once you wanna go narrower than 6nm, you need high speed optimised filters… Astronomik maxFR, antlia pro (i think the 4.5nm are rated for as fast as f/2) are probably your safest reasonable bet. If you want the best, chroma are your go to.
