The Ghost of Lynds: A tribute to its discoverer and its faint, rated-4 brightness. LBN 1122 (Lynds Bright Nebula 1122) is a faint molecular cloud and reflection nebula located in the constellation Libra. Often nicknamed the "Magic Flying Cloud" by astrophotographers, this cosmic structure consists primarily of interstellar dust particles and hydrogen gas that scatter and reflect the light from nearby stars. Dual Structures: While cataloged as a bright nebula, it is highly complex and encompasses two dense concentrations of obscuring dust. These are identified as LDN 1778 and LDN 1780 from Lynds' Catalogue of Dark Nebulae.Extreme Faintness: On astronomer Beverly Lynds' original scale from 1 (brightest) to 6 (dimmest), LBN 1122 is rated a 4, making it a challenging target for deep-sky imaging.Size and Scale: The nebula spans roughly one degree across the sky (about 60 by 30 arcminutes). This makes it a wide-field astronomical target that sits in a stream of molecular clouds running toward the constellation Serpens Caput.
