Description
Finally some better weather for this hobby. Although this season really is for another category of scopes, I thought I could take a shot at M97 and 108 and crop in on the two objects...
At first glance, both objects appear to float in proximate vicinity and probably in universal terms they are not too far from each other. However in human terms using a tape measure...Just kidding...
The Owl Nebula, a planetary nebula at approximately 2030 LY from Earth, floats inside our home galaxy, the Milky Way. It is located in the northern constellation Ursa Major. It has an apparent brightness of 9.9 and was discovered by Messier's observing colleague Pierre Méchain on February 16th 1781 and cataloged as M 97.
The Surfboard Galaxy at approximately 48' separation from the Owl Nebula, lies at 28 million LY away from Earth. Close to 14,000 time further away then the Owl Nebula. Compared with Andromeda, our closest neighbor, at 2,5 milling years distance. M 108 is a barrel spiral Galaxy type SBbc with an estimated mass of 125 billion solar mass. Pierre Méchain discovered it between 1781 and 1782.
