Description
NGC 7380, also known as the Wizard Nebula, is an open star cluster surrounded by an emission nebula located in the constellation Cepheus. It is about 7,200 light-years away from Earth and spans about 100 light-years across. NGC 7380 is notable for its complex, intricate structure of bright and dark regions, created by gas and dust illuminated by young, hot stars within the cluster. The star formation in this region gives the nebula its distinct shape, often likened to a "wizard" due to the wispy, twisting tendrils of gas and dust.
The surrounding region of NGC 7380 contains ionized hydrogen gas and dark molecular clouds, producing striking contrast when observed in different wavelengths. The powerful radiation from the hot stars in NGC 7380 is carving out bubbles and creating pillars and ridges within the nebula, which are typical of active star-forming regions.
