The IC 1318 emission nebula (the Butterfly Nebula or Sadr region) is located at an estimated distance of between 3,700 and 5,000 light-years from Earth, in the constellation Cygnus, far behind of the central star Sadr (γ Cygni) at approximately 1,500 to 1,800 light-years who isn't physically part of the nebular complex.
