Description
NGC 1360, also known as the Robin's Egg Nebula, is an elliptical planetary nebula located in the constellation Fornax. It lies approximately 700 light-years from Earth. Unlike many planetary nebulae, which have a well-defined ring-like or spherical structure, NGC 1360 has an elongated, elliptical shape.
The Robin's Egg Nebula consists of a shell of ionized gas that was ejected from a dying star in its final evolutionary stages. The central star, a white dwarf, is responsible for illuminating the nebula, making it visible in optical and infrared wavelengths. The nebula's blue color results from oxygen emissions excited by ultraviolet radiation from the white dwarf.
