Description
M51, also known as the Whirlpool Galaxy, is a stunning spiral galaxy located about 31 million light-years away in the constellation Canes Venatici. It is one of the most famous examples of a grand-design spiral galaxy, characterized by its well-defined, graceful spiral arms. M51 is interacting with a smaller companion galaxy, NGC 5195, which is linked to the Whirlpool by a tidal bridge of gas and dust. This interaction between the two galaxies has triggered intense star formation in M51’s spiral arms, making it a bright and active galaxy. The Whirlpool Galaxy's distinct structure and its cosmic dance with NGC 5195 make it a favorite subject for astronomers and astrophotographers, offering valuable insights into galaxy interactions and evolution.
