Description
The Draco Triplet consists of NGC 5981 (right), NGC 5982 (center), and NGC 5985 (left). NGC 5981 is a spiral galaxy seen edge-on, 6.3 arc minutes from NGC 5982, while NGC 5985 is a spiral galaxy seen face-on, 7.7 arc minutes from NGC 5982. NGC 5982, in the middle, is an elliptical galaxy about 130 million light-years away and about 100,000 light-years in diameter. NGC 5982 has many shells, nearly 26, that form circular arcs, with the farthest shell located 150 arc seconds from the galaxy's major axis radius, and the innermost shell 8 arc seconds from the nucleus. These shells are the result of galaxy mergers.
