Description
NGC 520, also known as the "Flying Ghost", is a pair of colliding spiral galaxies located in the constellation Pisces, about 105 million light-years from Earth. The system's main component is a galactic disk that is viewed edge-on, making it appear faint in optical wavelengths. The secondary component, which is brighter but less massive, is located to the northwest. The two are separated by a dark dust lane. The region just outside the galactic nucleus experienced a period of increased star formation around the time the two began to interact. There are also two dwarf galaxies nearby, one of which, cataloged as UGC 957, is located in the tidal tail to the north - it may be the result of the interaction.
