Description
Barnard's Galaxy (NGC 6822, IC 4895, Caldwell 57) is a barred irregular galaxy located in the constellation Sagittarius, about 1.6 million light-years away. It is part of the Local Group of galaxies and is the closest non-satellite galaxy to the Milky Way, but is outside the gravitational confinement of the Milky Way. It has a diameter of about 7,000 light-years.
The magenta nebulae inside and around the galaxy are the giant clouds of molecular hydrogen gas, which are star-forming regions.
