The night sky often places unrelated objects together in a way that creates a compelling visual story. This field captures two of the most famous deep-sky objects in Ursa Major: the Owl Nebula (M97) and the Surfboard Galaxy (M108).

M97, visible near the upper left of the frame, is a planetary nebula formed when a Sun-like star shed its outer layers near the end of its life. Its characteristic double-lobed interior gives rise to the appearance of an owl's eyes, earning it one of the most recognizable nicknames in amateur astronomy.

Across the frame lies M108, an edge-on spiral galaxy approximately 45 million light-years away. Its elongated shape, dark dust lanes, and scattered regions of star formation stand in stark contrast to the delicate shell of the Owl Nebula.

Although these objects appear close together from our perspective on Earth, they are separated by an immense gulf of space. The Owl Nebula resides within our own Milky Way, while M108 belongs to the distant realm of external galaxies. Surrounding them are countless faint galaxies, each containing billions of stars and adding further depth to this cosmic scene.

This image explores that contrast of scale and distance: a dying star in our galactic neighborhood sharing the same field of view as an entire galaxy millions of light-years away.
